MEET THE HOU SEK KING: Kok Liong has been working as an insurance agent for 25 years and he works with Practice on a regular basis. He is also a passionate home cook in peranakan-style cooking. He first learnt to cook by observing and eventually, assisting his grandmother as a child, who had to cook for more than 20 people at a time. From watching her, he learnt to appreciate the entire process of cooking, from the preparation of pounding spices with the mortar and pestle, to the selection of ingredients, to cutting, cooking and then, flavouring. In his words: 'I am a loving person, so I love watching people enjoy my food. So I am nervous having to cook for so many people this time round, but I hope you will enjoy it!'
