Kochabi Kitchen came about in a back alley in Gopeng, Ipoh. Chef-Owner, Michelle was on a 2-month road trip around Malaysia, covering 23 towns in 8 states. On that day, she was in search of an elusive home-made chee cheong fun that opens when the stars are aligned. To her dismay, the sun outshone the stars that very day. What she found instead was a dilapidated handwritten signage that spelt "Kochabi". Curious as always, she asked an idling neighbour, who nonchalantly replied, "It means 古早味" (old school taste in literal translation)
With that in mind, Michelle researched on the word and found that it indeed means 古早味 and is used by some in Penang and Taiwan. The same day, she went on social media and registered the brand name, knowing exactly that this is what she wanted her future kitchen to serve up. Comforting, familiar, delicious, soulful, relatable food that will feed not only the tummies but souls with the flavours and stories behind every dish.
